Claying reaches very embedded contaminants. How often should you use it? Well, think of clay as an exfoliant for our skin. It's not something you use every time you wash your face. Clay plays a similar role.
A simple way to see if your car should be clayed is by lightly running your hands on your clean paint. If you feel small bumps, even after you wash it, your car should be clayed.
Clay is available in different forms: clay bars, clay mitts or sponges. I personally prefer clay sponges. They are safe and quick to use.
As a general rule, don't rub anything on your paint without some sort of lubrication. I like to use Optimum No Rinse, diluted as a clay lubricant.
Spray the clay lubricant onto the car and glide the bar, mitt or sponge back and forth in one direction. If the clay happens to cause small scratches, it is easier to remove those scratches. Use the least amount of pressure as possible. After a while, you will feel the clay glide very easily. This section is done.
If you are using a clay bar, you will see all the dirt on the bar. Knead again and fold it on itself to have a clean section again. If you are using a mitt or sponge, you can wash it. Repeat for the entire car.
This process will leave your car clean and ready for a wax or paint correction.
