What you'll need:
Brushes
Hose
Tire applicator (if using a gel)
Start with a dry wheel. A lot of new wheel cleaners contain iron removing chemicals. After you spray the cleaner on, let the product sit for a couple of minutes. You will see the wheel turn red as it reacts with the iron.
Now you can start brushing. Using a long narrow brush, reach between the spokes from all the angles. Depending on the style of the wheel, it may require an assortment of brushes.
Using a hose, rinse down the product. Although a power washer is not required, it will make the process easier. Use this chance to take off heavy mud or soil with the hose. Afterwards, inspect the rims to see if you missed any spots.
Spray the areas you missed again, and also the tire and wheel wells. Let it sit and then agitate with the brushes. Depending on the condition of the wheels, this may take several applications.
Once the wheels, the tires and the wheel wells are cleaned, it is time to finish it by applying a tire. Now is also a good time to inspect the tire wear. Do your tires look low? Do you have enough tread? Are the tires wearing unevenly?
Finally, time to finish with tire shine. Much like shoes, a lot comes to personal preference. Do you like a matte finish? Or do you prefer a wet tire look. There are aerosol, spray and gel products. Personally, I prefer a matte finish from an aerosol spray.
